The Center for Gary Snyder Studies is named after the man who is internationally recognized as the Poet Laureate of Deep Ecology. The Center was founded in 2015 at Hunan University by Professor Joan Qionglin Tan and is now housed at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). The Center welcomes new members from around the world to join and participate in collaborative projects in the fields of ecocriticism, environmental ethics, Buddhist ecopoetics, and comparative cultural and literary studies that draw upon and broaden Snyder’s own work on behalf of a more ecological civilization.
Eco-manifesto of the Center
I pledge allegiance to the soil
of our land,
and to the beings who thereon dwell
one ecosystem
in diversity
under the sun
With joyful interpenetration for all.
(From Gary Snyder’s “For All”, but the second line “of Turtle Island”
is changed into “of our land” due to different cultures)
